Footage of the University of Oklahoma’s SAE Essay When footage of the University of Oklahoma’s SAE fraternity singing a disgustingly racist chant which included the phrase â€Å"there will never be a nigger in SAE† emerged a couple weeks ago, I felt many things, but surprised wasn’t one of them. The video may have been taken at a private fraternity event on a bus, but I know firsthand that pervasive racism in white Greek organizations is not a new thing. I spent four years at a mostly white college in Kentucky, where daily acts of racism occurred in front of my face. So after seeing the way that some Southern white college students act in the presence of black people, it did not surprise me at all that they’d sing a fun little song about lynching niggers when they think we can’t hear them. Transylvania University is a small college (yes, it really exists; yes, that’s really what it’s called; no, I didn’t major in bloodsucking) in Lexington, Kentucky. The school was a handful of blocks away from the better-known University of Kentucky and an hour and some change away from Louisville, where I’m from. That’s why I chose the school, in part; I was an anxious kid who wanted to start over with a new group of classmates, and nearly every high school student in Louisville enrolls in either the University of Kentucky or the University of Louisville. Transy was far enough away from home yet still close enough for regular visits, had a great academic reputation, and a really cool name. And they gave me a scholarship. I decided to commit to Transy without visiting the campus; I felt like I knew enough about it, and again, they gave me the biggest scholarship of any other school I’d been accepted to (I was also really into vampire lore at the time). But on move-in day, my already rioting heart nearly stopped beating altogether as my mother and I turned into the dorm parking lot to find a Confederate flag in every window on the second floor of one of the boys’ dorms. When I enrolled at Transylvania in 2000, there were about 1,100 students, and about 20 of them were black which, as I understand it, was a school record (Transylvania was founded in 1780). A quick Google image search of the school name yields acres and acres of smiling white faces, except for the occasional basketball player. The college itself is about two blocks of bright green grass and rich brown brick buildings punctuated with trees that explode white in the spring. The apex of the campus, the building proudly displayed in their marketing materials, is a stark white building with big, stately columns called Old Morrison. There’s no sweet way to say that Old Morrison looked like the Big House on an antebellum plantation, so I won’t try to be poetic about it. So: It looks like massa’s house, and paired with all the heavy limbed trees and the blazing pink bloomingtrees and the bluest sky you’ve ever seen in your life arching forever overhead and all the melodic country accents traveling along with you as you walk through the courtyard, it sometimes feels like you’re walking through a scene in Gone With the Wind. And we all know what that was like for black folks. (Spoiler: slaves. We were slaves. ) The back of the school, known as â€Å"back circle,† is anchored by a large oval lawn punctuated with trees here and there. Transy’s student dormitories are situated around this circle; the flow of traffic, once you enter the circle’s entrance on the right-hand side, moves right, past the two boys’ dormitories collectively known as Clay/Davis. You first come to Davis Hall, home of upperclassmen and fraternity members this is the building that housed the row of Confederate flags that greeted my mother and me. After that is Clay Hall, where Transy’s freshman boys live. Davis Hall was named for Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederacy, while Clay Hall was named after early 19th century Kentucky politician Henry Clay, who owned slaves (but magnanimously freed them after he died). Davis attended Transylvania, and Clay was once a faculty member there. Forrer Hall, the girls’ dorm, rounds the circle. (Another man with the last name of Clay Cassius, who was an abolitionist is also a Transylvania alum. There aren’t any buildings named after him. ) Here’s why there was a Confederate flag in each of those windows on the second floor in Davis Hall. The school, being as small as it was, had Greek organizations, but rather than having separate Greek housing, they had Greek floors in the dorms where all members lived. The floor with the Confederate flags in the windows was inhabited by the men of Kappa Alpha Order, known as the KAs. Every black person on campus (and those who were attuned to racial insensitivity) knew to stay away from the KAs. They were the good ol’ Southern boys, and the organization itself was founded on loaded terms like â€Å"chivalry,† â€Å"modern knighthood† (gee, why does that sound familiar? ), and the â€Å"ideal Christian gentleman. They list Confederate commander Robert E. Lee as their â€Å"spiritual founder,† which still doesn’t really make much sense to me, and though it wasn’t their official emblem, they were very, very fond of the Confederate flag. Those windows and the flags in them belonged to the KAs. When I saw the row of flags in the building I instantly told my mother that I wanted to go back home. She told me, of course, that wasn’t an option, and so I dealt with it as best I could. I went to class, tried to be open and sociable, and vented to my handful of black friends when we were alone. Promoting the Erie Canal EssayKAs at the University of Alabama issued a formal apology to the historically black Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority after their Old South parade in which they were decked out in full uniforms â€Å"happened† to pause in front of an anniversary event they were having. Kappa Alpha issued a national ban on the donning of the Confederate uniforms the following year. But, like the moving of the flags from the windows, nothing really changed at Transy. I still felt unsafe and unwelcome. Could’ve had something to do with the huge portrait of Jefferson Davis hanging in the lobby of the hall that the KAs called home. My friend’s dorm room door. Tracy Clayton The boys’ dorms may have been named after both Davis and Clay, but Davis received the most fanfare. A 9-foot statue of Davis hung in the lobby of his namesake residence hall, and a huge bust of him lived in the campus library. In April 2001 (April also happens to be â€Å"Confederate History Month† in the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas, and Virginia and in spots of other Southern states), someone vandalized the door of a black male friend of mine by scrawling â€Å"nigger† on it in black marker. My friends and I hurried over to take pictures of the graffiti before the administration painted over it, which we knew they would do quickly. Newspapers reported that someone scratched another slur into the same door later, but I don’t remember that. The incident spurred another round of â€Å"important conversations† on campus that typically lead nowhere, but this time did lead to the removal of the portrait of Jefferson Davis, which I definitely saw as a good-faith effort to at least pretend to care about whether or not students of color felt safe and welcome on campus. I hoped that we were finally chipping away at what really was a modern-day Confederate fort housing men who actually thought of themselves as Confederate soldiers, who flew the stars and bars and faced the south to sing â€Å"Dixie. † Then-university president Charles Shearer said of the incident and the portrait, â€Å"If you have African-American students who live in that hall I can understand how that would make them feel. † His understanding apparently ran out four months later when the portrait was rehung in a different part of campus (â€Å"A portrait of Confederate president Jefferson Davis has risen again at Transylvania University,† reported the Associated Press), its removal now positioned not as an attempt to ease worried brown hearts and minds as it was before, but as a preplanned maintenance removal. The same article contained praise for Shearer’s decision to rehang the picture from the Sons of Confederate Veterans and a nod to the United Daughters of the Confederacy. And so Davis Hall remained Davis Hall, home to Confederate sympathizers of all ages. I often wrote articles for the school paper complaining about the racial climate on campus (the newspaper staff was amazing and allowed me to run some pretty sharp-tongued pieces), and at least one was ripped out and taped to a wall in Davis with the words â€Å"A FINE EXAMPLE OF IGNORANCE† scrawled across it with a marker that looked a lot like the one used on my friend’s door. The day before my graduation day, I walked about the lawn of Old Morrison, strewn with lawn chairs placed for the commencement ceremony. We’d already gotten our seating assignments and I wanted to check mine out. Mine was near some scaffolding on the side of the stage, and hanging loosely from the scaffolding, within eyeshot, was a tiny black noose. I don’t know if someone put it there knowing that I would see it. But it sure felt like it. I don’t mean to suggest, of course, that everybody living in the dorm or on campus was racially insensitive and addicted to Confederate insignia I met some truly wonderful and beautiful people of all races at Transy. Nor am I positing that members of KA were the only racially insensitive people on campus. But I do mean to paint a picture of why that SAE video, while jarring, did not surprise me. For a black girl fighting to get an education in the South, fraternities were an early introduction to privilege. I learned then that certain people could essentially do and say what they wanted with little more than a slap on the wrist or a moved portrait as punishment. White fraternities seem to attract the most privileged of already privileged men and boys, and they become breeding grounds for all the â€Å"isms† that white exclusiveness can create sexism, classism, racism. And their offenses are often explained away as mistakes. Someone wrote â€Å"nigger† on a black kid’s door? A prank gone wrong. A girl is raped at a frat party? Boys will be boys. A group of white frat boys sings a song about hanging niggers on a bus? Everyone makes mistakes. This week, as I clicked through my alma mater’s website to jog my memory to write this essay, I noticed that all references to Jefferson Davis seem to have been quietly removed, even from the short list of notable alumni that ends the brief telling of Transy’s history. Davis is slated to be torn down and rebuilt soon. I wonder if they’ll quietly drop his name from that too.

Marketing Tactics Place Towson Car Wash will be built at 825 York Road, Towson, Maryland. This address was chosen because of its convenient location, as well as, the lot size. An average car wash takes up about 1,000 square feet (Moore). This lot is just over a half acre of land so there is more than enough room to accommodate such a structure. It is also located on a corner, which means that there is two ways of entering and exiting the premises. The most important factor associated with this location is the amount of passing traffic. Towson Town Center is Maryland’s second largest shopping mall with almost 200 stores and is located just one-mile from the future T. C. W. location. There are also seven apartment complexes and numerous houses less than a mile away from the location. Just a few feet down the street, there are fast food restaurants, as well as, a gas station, and grocery store. Lastly, there is an exit for I-695 just a half mile down the street. All of these elements bring a great deal of traffic to the area, which is why we believe it is the perfect place to open the first Towson Car Wash. Price There is a strong demand for our service and not much competition in our area. This allowed us some freedom when constructing our pricing layout. The first factor we took into consideration was our target market. Our target market is unique in the sense that it appeals to everyone with an automobile. Most target markets focus on a specific group; however we are opening a car wash which in theory could attract all automobile owners regardless of such factors as age, social class and so on. The second factor we considered was various packages to accommodate our wide customer base. We recognized that our customer base could range from students in high school or college to working adults. Lastly, we wanted our prices to reflect the quality of our services. When it came down to our prices it wasn’t a question of setting our prices to compete with our competition. The most important factor for our prices was that the price matched the quality of our service not only in our eyes but more importantly in the eyes of our customers. We are offering three different packages: bronze, silver and gold. The bronze is our basic package which cost 10 dollars. The bronze package includes a standard car wash, tire cleaning and air/towel drying. The silver package cost 12 dollars and includes a full service wash, tire cleaning, window cleaning inside and out, dash-side panel cleaning, interior vacuum cleaning and an air/towel dry. Finally the gold package cost 20 dollars and  includes full service wash, tire cleaning, window cleaning inside and out, dash-side cleaning, interior vacuum cleaning, shampoo carpet cleaning and an air/towel dry. Product Our business is mainly service oriented with providing car washes. To further expand our revenue we will be offering car products within our store front. The products will reflect our service and be car convenience products. The products will range from air fresheners to steering wheel covers. The idea here is to be able to meet customers potential needs. If customers are happy with our services they will be more likely to buy our products. When customers are getting their car washed they will be inside of our store. Inside the store we will have comfortable seating and television to keep them occupied while their car is being washed. It makes sense from a business perspective to have products in the store for customers to check out while they wait. If they are getting their car cleaned chances are they might be interested in an air freshener of other related car products. We don’t plan on making our own products; therefore we will be using other companies with reputable products. Again the goal for these small purchase products will not be to generate massive profits but to satisfy customer’s potential needs. We plan on making most of our profits from our services but if customers use our business we want to be capable of meeting all of their needs. The main reason we began this business venture was due to the high demand for car washes that wasn’t being met in Towson. The demand is there all there is left to do is find ways to draw in the customers. We came up with a few promotions that we felt would appeal to our potential customers. The first was a rewards program that would ultimately lead to benefits such as discounts and even a free car wash. The way the rewards program works is every time a person gets their car washed we record it and after three washes the customer would get the fourth free. The second promotion we are planning to run is with local college students. All the college students would have to do is bring their student id and they will receive a discount. This deal applies to students that attend schools in the Towson area. For our last promotion we plan on running events for local clubs and Greek life organizations. We will keep our doors open to any fundraising groups that are willing to partner with us. The way it will work is the group or organization we partner with will be responsible for promoting a certain day that we both agree on to support their cause. They will drive more customers to us and in return we will give them a part of the profits from that day. When we first open we will plan on running some basic advertising campaigns. Most of our advertising will be free due to the fact that we are located on a major intersection were thousands of cars drive each day. Most customers will see our sign and be made aware of our new business. To further touch potential consumers we will be putting ads in local newspapers and college newspapers such as the Towerlight. In these ads we will add our current promotions. We have should also note that those getting their car washed on the weekends are more likely to spend more money. You can see in the chart, that the average person on the weekend spends more than one during a business day. We also coin that as a result that working people come in on the weekend and those with full-time jobs tend to spend more than those who do not and can come in during the week. One last thing we would like to note in our financial analysis, is that the above chart is an average. If we were to actually document each weeks income, it would vary by season. Our business is seasonal in that customers are more likely to spend and utilize our service during the Spring, Summer, and Fall rather than winter. Conclusion In conclusion, we believe T. C. W to have a model for success. Although it might take around two years to make profit, we know that we can be successful once we pay off our initial start-up costs. There is a significant demand for a car wash in the Towson area and we plan to go above and beyond meeting that demand by not only offering a car wash, but a great one that meets the needs of our consumers and builds relationships with them through superb customer service.

Applying Branding Techniques Essay Introduction The Brand Techniques simulation is based on cosmetic company’s building of a new brand. Ca’Shara is a United States based cosmetic manufacturer and marketer of skin care, hair care, and make-up. Ca’Shara has an established brand presence and known for quality products. The recent consumer interest in natural products has made Ca’Shara management decide to cater to this segment of the cosmetic market. The company has decided on a 5,000 year old health care system from India called Ayurveda. As the newly appointed Brand Manager, I will be responsible for building the new brand Three executives gave their expert advice in the decision making process throughout the simulation exercise. They were Tina Trotter, Head of Sales; Monique Knight, Brand Consultant; and Jim Reding, Country Manager. Perceptual Map The simulation give the psychographic profile of the Ayurvedic customer as Caucasian to African American, age 18-35 with an income of $50,000 or higher. The consumer survey shows the customer base largely holistic and classy with a combined 55%. Meaning they like the natural base products and exclusive products. The principles of Ayurveda are explained as the Three Doshas. This is important to understand because it shows the three skin types the new brand will target. This will be dry, oily, and irritable. The brand position choice made was high on both holistic and classy and titled Enduring Secrets from the East. This was incorrect. The correct choice was high holistic and low classy. Correct title is Perfect balance, mind and body. The reason for the choice was because of the psychographic percentages only contained a slim difference in weighted value. I didn’t realize this choice meant the brand would need to carve out a new niche instead of competing against another company’s products. The choice made meant the perception of the product would be set as a lofty, unreachable goad of  perfect in every way alleviating all concerns and possible disadvantages. Brand Name, Logo, Slogan Two choices were made correctly using the focus group information. The brand name chosen was Natural Balance because it aligned with the brand positioning. Logo number 2 was chosen because of the market survey’s information. The logos green color and curves match the preferences of the focus groups. The shape gives the feel of feminine soft. The slogan of A Return to Nature was chose, but was not the best choice as it was similar to a competitor’s slogan. This choice doesn’t allow the brand to stand alone and differentiate itself in the market. It could dilute the brands identity. According to Cron.com the choosing of a name, logo, and slogan are nearly as important as the products sold. â€Å"If you choose your name and logo well, they will stay in your customers minds and remind them of the value your company offers. In fact, a well-chosen name and logo can help you to stand out amount the competition. Your customers will instantly think of your memorable business name and logo whenever they are in the market for your products or services.† For this very reason, the slogan that is similar to another like product is a grave error. Brand Associations- The Final Look Now we are down to choosing the brand associations. Who will promote and what events or causes will be align our brand with? The focus groups chose Maria Switzer as the spokesperson. They also pointed to two functions of interest, Partner with GreenEco and providing grants to women’s trust funds. These choices used $27,300 of the allotted $34,000. Total cost of these choices is $327,000 and under budget. It makes sense for a product that is built around natural ingredients to be associated with an environmental group like GreenEco. It also shows the company’s long term commitment to the environment. The choice of providing grants to women’s trust funds is a choice that gives back to the community in a broad spectrum. The customer base can see where they may see benefit locally for the dollars they’ve spent. The choice of Maria Switzer was that of a strong, independent female with her own sense of style. The public’s view of longevity is associated with this individual’s unique persona. Beyond the Simulation The simulation was good about applying the principles of brand positioning, but there are more ways to make your product stand out among similar brands. One additional aspect is to show ownership. The simulation had a spokesperson picked, but customers like to be able to identify an owner. This is true for large and small company’s ability to stand out from the competition. Knowing the face behind the product is important to keeping the consumer engaged. Per the SBA, â€Å"Businesses really thrive when the energy of the owner is there.† A good example was Steve Jobs involvement with Microsoft. Small businesses can equally benefit from the consumer having a face behind the product or service. It lets people know the owner is involved and active with the business. Another way to have stood out was not only the shape of the container, but to have the container recyclable, biodegradable, or refillable would have been a good aspect to have. This would further appeal to the profile of being environmentally friendly and support the GreenEco cause the brand is supporting. The brand in the simulation, Ayurveda, immediately had a sense of well-being and soothing associated with the brand. Not only is it not irritating to the individual’s skin, but the environment too. The brand was immediately associated with everything â€Å"green† in today’s society. Service vs. Tangible product Had the simulation used a service instead of a tangible product application there would have been no real difference. A brand is in the minds of the consumer. It is setting or understanding their perception of the product or service offered. Conclusion The simulation was an excellent tool in learning and applying the branding techniques. It was only after wrong decisions were made and explained, that I understood why they were incorrect. At that point they seem obviously wrong. Making sure to use the differences of a product or service is the key to finding a niche and making a product stand out among the masses. In the novel The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien the author tells about his experiences in the Vietnam war by telling various war stories. The quote, "It has been said of war that it is a world where the past has a strong grip on the present, where machines seemed sometimes to have more will power than me, where nice boys (girls) were attracted to them, where bodies ruptured and burned and stand, where the evil thing trying to kill you could look disconnecting human and where except in your imagination it was impossible to be heroic." relates to each of his stories. The first part of the quote matches with the first story, The Things They Carried. The story told about the items that each soldier took with them to the war. The quote says that the past has a strong grip on the present. The items that the soldiers have with them remind them of there past. Sometimes the soldiers have to let go of something they have because of certain conditions. For example Jimmy Cross had a good luck from his girlfriend Martha, it was a pebble that was from the Jersey shoreline. She sent it to him because it reminded her of how they are "together but separate". Jimmy took this everywhere during the war and kept it in his mouth. When one of his friends got killed during action he got rid of the pebble because he thought it was a distraction. The second part of the quote, which says, "Where machines seemed sometimes to have more will power than me" Relates to the story "The Man I Killed". In this story the author talks about the man he killed. He starts out by describing the dead person then he starts to regret it. The quote states than in war a machine, which could be a gun, sometimes has more power than a person does. The author noticed this after he killed the enemy soldier, he noticed that it was the gun that killed the person and not him. This made him feel better after a while, but never forgot about the person he killed. The war story named "Sweetheart of the Song Tra Bong" relates to the third part of the quote, which says "where nice boys (girls) were attracted to them". The story was about a girl that was changed dramatically by the Vietnam War.

DISCUSSION Microorganism are organism that are too small and cannot be seen with naked eyes. The phrase of ubiquity of microorganism refers to the concept that microorganism are everywhere in our daily life surrounding. In our everyday common life ,microbes are virtually ubiquitous. They are in the air we breath,the foods we eat and as well as the skin of our fingers. Aseptic transfer is the transference of bacteria or other microbial cultures fromone container to another while maintaining purity of the culture. Pure cultures–consistof only one type of bacteria ideally the descendants from a single bacterial cell.Because microbes are present everywhere – in the air, the work area, clothes, bodies,etc. , – it is important to follow the rules for aseptic transfer at all times. This is the onlyway of controlling Contamination–Maintaining purity of culture is essential in microbiology if the biologist is to beable to identify bacteria, test for antibiotic sens itivity, or maintain stock cultures. Oftenin nature a pure culture is impossible to come by because species live together. Thescientist is left working with mixed cultures.Pure cultures can be derived from mixedcultures through isolation of cultures and this also requires that sterile (aseptic)techniques to be used. Normally transference is done from colonies. A colony consists of usuallyseveral million cells that are assumed to be the descendants from one cell. Inoculations from one media to another, therefore, is usually done by removal of a fewmillion cells from one colony into a new environment. This must be done with theintegrity of all colonies remaining intact. Through the use of sterile techniques, this canbe accomplished successfully.There are a number of tools that are used for inoculation procedures. Inoculating loops are used when transferring members of a broth culture to another broth, platedmedia or an agar slant. Inoculating needles-are used when inoculating a broth culturefrom a colony on plated media or when making a stab in an agar deep or agar slantfrom broth or solid media. Forceps -are used to place sterile disks containing sometesting agent in a broth culture or on a solid media culture. Pipets-are used when transferring liquids into other liquids or onto solid media.Flaming-is used to incinerate any microbes left on loops and needles. Alcohol flaming-is used to sterilize forceps. When flaming inoculating loops and needles, careshould be taken avoid burning the plastic handle at the end of each. The metal of theloop or needle should glow red hot and then be allowed to cool before dipping it into any cultures – if the metal is too hot it will kill the organisms that are to be used for inoculation. Alcohol flaming for the forceps is done by dipping the forceps into a smallamount of alcohol and then burning the alcohol off.The forceps should be dipped andburned three times. Care should be taken to avoid alcohol running up toward the hand. The flame will follow the alcohol and burns will result. Pipets normally used in lab are prepackaged, sterile, disposable pipets. Sometimes glass pipets are used and these are stored in cans. The glass pipets arediscarded into a pipet jar filled with disinfectant. Disposable pipets are deposited inbiohazard bags. It is important that pipettors are always used and pipetting by mouth isprohibited.

Power and passion coalesce to form the strangulation of the beautiful and innocent Porphyria, and at the same time strangle the reader’s ability to comprehend what is occurring and why it is occurring. The murder’s monologue depicts a heinous crime. The simple fact that the monologue is issued from the murderer himself creates a sense of distrust. There is no doubt that the man is disturbed, but the level of his lunacy remains uncertain. In one short poem, Browning provides an intense glimpse into the mind of a homicidal maniac,†¦show more content†¦Harold states that the masculine form of her name is Porphyry, a representative in the school of Neoplatonism (20). He concludes that, Porphyria’s lover fanatically acts in accordance with a Neoplatonic view of the world which carries h im . . . into madness. This Neoplatonic thought allows him to believe he has the ability to free himself from physical limitations through the dichotomy of his conscious self in the first half of the poem and through his physical behavior in the latter part (21). Harold suggests the poem’s title is directly correlated to the actions and thoughts of Porphyria’ s lover.
